If inclement weather becomes an issue for garbage and recycle collection and roads are too dangerous to operate equipment, the collections schedule will be one day behind.

Health Department, Social Services and Veteran Services Offices will remain closed to clients and patients today, May 21. 2013. Clients and patients having appointments today are asked to call and reschedule the appointment.

EVENT:  Hurricane Irene Recovery
Time:    September 7, 2011 2:30 PM

Beginning September 7, 2011 at 8 a.m. FEMA and Craven County have opened a Disaster Recovery Center at 710 DeGraffenreid Avenue in New Bern (formerly Eckerd's/Rite Aid) for those residents who suffered losses during hurricane Irene.  FEMA, SBA, mitigation and local disaster relief organizations are staffing the Center from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. seven days a week until further notice. If persons need assistance applying for Federal Aid they are encouraged to visit with the appropriate Federal and local representatives for help.

Craven County Emergency Management Message #7

Curfew
Craven County has imposed a curfew for the unincorporated areas of the County on Monday, August 29, 2011 from 10:00PM until 5:00AM August 30, 2011.

Debris
Citizens living on State maintained Secondary Roads in the unincorporated area of Craven County may place only vegetative debris on road shoulders for North Carolina DOT removal.  Construction and demolition debris will not be permitted on road shoulders.  Additionally, all citizens may dispose only vegetative debris from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM beginning Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the following sites:

Weyerhaeuser Site - 1785 Weyerhaeuser Rd. <== As of 9/17/2011 6:00pm, the Weyerhaeuser site will be closing
Creekside1821 Old Airport Rd.
Harlowe100 Blades Rd. <== As of 8/31/2011, the Harlowe site is no longer available

County Offices and CARTS
All Craven County Government offices will resume operating hours beginning at 8:00 AM, Tuesday, August 30, 2011.

Senior Service Locations
The Craven County Senior Services will be closed on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the following locations:

Senior Services on George Street, New Bern, NC
Senior Services in Town of Vanceboro, NC
Senior Services in Harlowe, Havelock, NC

Emergency Shelters
All Emergency Shelters in Craven County have been closed.

Craven County Emergency Management Message #3

At 3:00 PM on Friday, August 26, 2011, Craven County declared a State of Emergency in anticipation of the powerful Hurricane Irene and the potential for life threatening conditions and widespread damages that may occur.  All citizens, law enforcement and emergency response personnel are encouraged to cooperate with all safety measures being taken and abide by any further restrictions which may become necessary to overcome the emergency situation.

Craven County will open four (4) Emergency Shelters today at 3:00 PM at the following locations:

1. Havelock High School (101 Webb Blvd, Havelock)
2. Brinson Elementary   (319 Neuse Forest Ave, New Bern)
3. Benn Quinn Elementary (4275 Martin Luther King Blvd, New Bern) *
Pet Friendly*
4. Farm Life Elementary   (2000 Farm Life Ave, Vanceboro)
*Citizens should bring their own pillows, blankets, medication and any other special needs.*

Craven County Emergency Management Message #2

At 10:00 AM Craven County Emergency Management will open the Craven County Emergency Operations Center and will continue to closely monitor Hurricane Irene as it approaches the North Carolina Coast. Craven County Emergency Management officials are expecting dangerous winds, heavy rains and significant flooding associated with this storm beginning Friday Evening and lasting until Sunday.

Craven County citizens are encouraged to make immediate plans to secure homes, vehicles and personal property.

Craven County has issued a Voluntary Evacuation for those people living in low-lying areas or areas that have a history of flooding. People living in the following locations that are prone to flooding are encouraged to evacuate:

  • Harlowe (Adam's Creek and Clubfoot Creek)
  • Fairfield Harbor
  • Portions of the City of New Bern (National Avenue, Woodrow and Duffyfield Communities)
  • Sandy Point

Craven County will open four (4) Emergency Shelters today at 3:00 PM at the following locations:

Those residents who decide to remain in their homes are encouraged to make certain they have Disaster Preparedness kits containing supplies of non perishable food, water, medicine, cash, flashlight batteries and portable radios for this event.  Be advised that emergency personnel may not be able to respond to distress calls during critical stages of the storm.

Craven County Solid Waste Convenience Centers will be CLOSED Saturday, August 27, 2011 and hope to reopen on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 1:00 PM.

Citizens are encouraged to take immediate action and prepare for a dangerous Category 3 Hurricane.  Additional storm related information and updates will be available on the Craven County website (www.cravencountync.gov)
