WIC and Breastfeeding
WIC is a very strong supporter of breastfeeding. There are many benefits given to fully breastfeeding and partially breastfeeding mothers. Fully breastfeeding mothers receive one of the largest food packages WIC offers, including tuna and salmon. Fully breastfed infants will receive double the amount of fruit and vegetable infants foods, cereal, and they will also receive infant meats starting at six months. Fully and partially breastfeeding mothers are also eligible to receive WIC food benefits for one year after their baby's birth. For women who are breastfeeding, but choose to get a formula package, they will receive food benefits for six months after birth, but will still be eligible to receive lactation services for one year.
2014 Breastfeeding Classes
|Classes are held at the Craven County Health Department from 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.|
We recommend attending these classes in your third trimester, to ensure the information is still fresh in your mind after you have your baby.
WIC offers several services to our breastfeeding mothers. Currently the WIC staff includes one certified lactation consultant, as well as three lactation educators. We take any breastfeeding concerns during our normal business hours, and will do our best to get the issues resolved. If you have a preference as to whom with which you would like to speak, or you have a limited amount of time, we do recommend calling ahead to check your estimated wait time, and ensure the person is in the office.
Breast Pumps and Supplies
WIC does provide single manual hand pumps, and electric double pump systems to eligible WIC participants. There are guidelines to receive each of these. We also have several other breastfeeding supplies to assist with breastfeeding and infant latch. If you are interested in any of our breastfeeding supplies, please inquire and we will let you know what you would be eligible to receive. Breast pumps consults are on Mondays and Wednesdays.
MCAS Cherry Point
There is a visiting nurse who offers breastfeeding support through the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. If you are active duty military, or spouse, you can utilize this resource.
